Whether an app preview video is worth producing, what the stores require, and a structure that works in under thirty seconds.

App Preview Videos: When They Help and How to Make One

A preview video can lift conversion noticeably, or lower it. Unlike screenshots, a video is not free to get wrong, because on Google Play it replaces your first screenshot in the listing.

So the first question is whether you need one at all.

When a video earns its place

The value is in motion. Editing tools, drawing apps, games, anything where the experience is the interaction.

The workflow is surprising. If your app does in one step what normally takes ten, showing it is more convincing than claiming it.

The category expects it. In some categories every serious competitor has one, and its absence reads as unfinished.

When to skip it

If your app is mostly lists and forms, a video shows scrolling. Screenshots with clear captions communicate more per second.

A weak video is worse than none, because Play shows it instead of your best screenshot.

Store requirements

App Store. Up to three previews per device size, 15 to 30 seconds, captured from the app itself. Apple rejects videos that are mostly animated marketing rather than real footage.

Google Play. A YouTube link rather than an upload. The video must be public or unlisted, not private. Turn off ads on it.

Apple's rule about real footage is the one people trip on. A polished motion graphics piece with little actual app usage will be rejected.

A structure that works in 25 seconds

First 3 seconds. The core action, immediately. Autoplay is muted and viewers leave fast; no logo intro.

Seconds 3 to 15. One workflow start to finish. Not five features, one complete task.

Seconds 15 to 25. A second capability, then the result.

Last 2 seconds. End on a meaningful screen, not a logo card.

Practical production notes

Record from the simulator for clean dimensions and no personal data.

Slow down slightly. Real interaction speed is too fast to follow on first viewing.

Add text labels for each step. Sound is off by default, so anything only the audio explains is lost.

Do not show the whole app. One thing, done well, beats a tour.

Localisation

App Store allows a separate preview per locale. If you are already localising screenshots, the video is the next candidate for your top markets.

You do not need to re-record. Replacing the text overlays covers most of the value.

Measure it

Both consoles report conversion with and without the video in view.

If conversion drops after adding a video, remove it. That happens more often than people expect, particularly when the first three seconds are slow.

Before investing in video, make sure the screenshots are right. They carry more weight, cost far less to iterate on, and a strong screenshot set often makes the video unnecessary. buffmy.app Studio is built for exactly that iteration loop.
