A Store Asset Workflow for Solo Developers

Shipping alone means the design work lands on the same person who wrote the code, usually at the end, usually when energy is lowest. That is why so many good apps have listings that undersell them.

A repeatable process helps more than talent here.

Write before you design

Decide what the screenshots say before opening any design tool. Most bad listings are not badly designed, they are unclear.

Three sentences, one per frame:

  1. What the app does
  2. Why yours instead of the alternatives
  3. How quickly someone gets value

If you cannot write those three sentences, the design will not rescue you.

Capture clean source material

Take screenshots from the simulator, not a physical device. You get exact dimensions and a clean status bar.

Fill the app with realistic content first. Empty states and placeholder text make an app look unfinished. Real looking names, real looking numbers, a full list rather than one item.

If your app shows money, match the currency to your primary market.

Use one layout everywhere

Do not design each frame individually. Pick one arrangement and repeat it:

Caption at the top, device below, solid or lightly graded background, caption occupying roughly a quarter of the frame.

Repetition reads as intentional. Five differently arranged frames read as unfinished, even when each one is fine alone.

Constrain your palette

Take your app's primary colour, use a darker tone of it for the background, and white for the caption.

Two colours. Not five. If you are unsure about colour pairing, one hue with tonal variation never looks wrong.

Use system typefaces

SF Pro on iOS, Roboto on Android. Free, familiar, and they look native in a store context.

Bold and plain reads better at thumbnail size than anything decorative.

Do the sizes last, and do them all at once

Once one frame is right, everything else is mechanical: other device classes, other languages, feature graphic for Play.

This is the part that eats a weekend if done by hand, and it is the part worth automating. buffmy.app takes the finished frame and produces every required size, plus translated variants, from the same source.

Check the icon at real size

Design the icon at 1024 pixels, then look at it at 60. That is roughly what a user sees in search results.

If detail disappears or a word becomes a smudge, simplify. One shape and one colour transition survives; a detailed illustration does not.

Keep the source

Store the original captures and the caption text somewhere you can find them in six months.

Every update, price change and localisation means regenerating this set. Having the source ready turns a rebuild into an hour instead of a restart.

The realistic standard

You are not trying to win a design award. You are trying to look credible in a list next to competitors, and to say clearly what the app does.

That bar is reachable alone, and clearing it is worth far more than most solo developers assume.
